There is job burnout and then there is burnout. It is completely naive and shortsighted by the WHO to label this a workplace syndrome - what, because thats what Christina said? Burnout is the amalgamation of all stressors, not just workplace - to suggest anything otherwise is nothing but a mislabeled oversight - a complete half-baked attempt at simplifying a complex topic by superficially limiting the subject matter.

I am basically on the brink of collapse, but know it's only due to work. Had taken a leave of absence, time off, switched employers, but always the same: do more with less. Days are spent in meetings and such, then in the evenings begin quiet work, reading through the hundreds of e-mails from the day, making to do list for next day, the cycle continues. My eating has suffered immensely (basically poor grab and go stuff, whatever is fastest), and I've stopped making plans with friends as I tend to end up having to cancel due to work emergencies. It's easy to say to change again, but took nine months to find the last job, so it's tricky out there here right now. I know this isn't good for me health-wise. Constant chest pain, feeling nauseous from stress, crazy insomnia, etc. Is this how life is?

This is a pretty good description of job burnout. Unfortunately, it doesn't suggest any remedy for people who are already so burnt out that they can't and don't want to work any more either in their current profession or any other, but need to work somewhere in order to support themselves and their families.

While I'm a colleague, I am also a fan of his books, his snarky humor, and his unique background in philosophy, entrepreneurship, technology, government, music, food (including pasta), and people. People use "leadership" as crutch; many don't have advance STEM Degree themselves and use very few people who got advance STEM to prove their point. For example, many here don't have an advance STEM degree. The cycle of thing shows that the number of people in military don't have advance STEM Degree; much less a military pension to draw upon. COVID 19 Global Pandemic has shown that weakness. We have a nursing strike. Who exactly got paid and then who actually gave those COVID 19 shots; seems like a liability. Alternatively, it is necessary for our "leaders" to have management/business experience; very few have advance management degree and an advance STEM Degree. These advance degree are third party verification of an education, experience and "LEADERSHIP SKILLS." Frankly, asking our young upon and coming sailors and solider to get STEM Degree while many don't even have a STEM degree is just plain hypocrisy. PS...take a look at the data analysis of people who replied... He really needs to stop covering for these hypo-critics...or join a committee of other Advance Degree PHDs then award them honorary advance degrees Leadership by example. PS:Why does Wikipedia not list Rickover's honorary advance degrees from Naval Postgraduate School nor the Naval War College 😀 😀 😀

If a normal garden variety human being needs to spend their weekends and vacations recovering from their work days, burnout is inevitable and that will be squarely on the leaders who designed that work environment - they’ll blame everyone but themselves when everyone inevitably starts quitting. If you’re relying on the overtime and heroics of your team to survive (Work hard play never! Do more with less!), then you better have strong autonomy, interesting highly skilled work, and a strong sense of purpose and psychological safety in your workplace. Sadly most places that expect unreasonable workloads also take away the very things that drive humans to want to excel. Hire robots if you don’t want to deal with the messy side of having humans work for you.

I just started "Beyond Agile Auditing" and look forward to how to communicate with my auditors how transforming from Waterfall to Agile and needing to experiment and create processes can work with their role of verifying if we are following our approved procedures. The problem right away is the auditors could give no guidance on our first Agile project because they had no knowledge of Agile. It's never easy in a bureaucracy to do anything for the first time.

Value stream Mapping has been around since 1998 and the « Learning to see » top selling book was issued in 2003. This concept has been applied to manufacturing first, but quickly expanded to service industries as well. If you’re Agile coach is not familiar with the concept, you can easily seek a Lean coach to help you in reducing overall lead time of your software delivery. good luck in your flow journey.😊

Ironically, I work as a massage therapist in a spa location that is noisy. Our break room has no windows. And we have five minutes between clients. We are increasingly treated like horses. In addition, there is no growth for a good girl like me. I was passed over for a promotion by a man who is younger and started two years later than me. He is black and I think he is the diversity token that our upper management thought would be easy for them.
